Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

What with all the hype and fuss surrounding Stranger Things last year, this little gem almost went unnoticed.

Almost.

I went into this not knowing what to expect, and came out wanting more.

Douglas Adams has always had a larger than life understanding of the universe, and Max Landis captures that perfectly on screen. The background score is nothing short of breathtaking, the mysterious undertones to the opening credits alone are enough testament to that.

The casting is on point, Samuel Barnett does an excellent job as the clueless yet hopelessly optimistic 'holistic detective'; Elijah Wood puts his innocent looks to perfect use as his character blunders throughout the season organically confused about everything happening around him.

The season began with around 5 different plot lines involving 5 different sets of people, and the action-packed two-part finale not only brought them all satisfactorily together, but also wrapped them up in a nice little box with a neat bow on top.

For fans of sci-fi, Dirk Gently'sHolistic Detective Agency is a dream come true. It has high speed chases, messy violent deaths (though none of them graphic), an element of time travel, a body-swapping cult built around a faulty technology from the past, a missing girl, her dead father who hires a detective to solve his murder before it even happens.

Five stars.

Update: Well, apparently, the show was ahead of its time; and people couldn't really appreciate the novelty of it. Whatever the case, the show has been cancelled.
Well done, world. Another fatality of your narrow mindedness.

This is why we can't have nice things.
